CV & Research

About

My name is Simbarashe Norman Fulukia (Simba) – Dance Artist, Choreographer, Movement Researcher

I am a Zimbabwean-born, Norway-based dance artist and choreographer working at the intersection of contemporary performance, indigenous knowledge systems, and community practice. My work explores how movement can be a tool for healing, identity, and collective awareness.

I created iNf9t Flo, a movement methodology inspired by Mbira music and Shona ancestral knowledge, where learning is circular, and every body—regardless of age, background, or ability—has something to teach.

My long-term vision is to contribute to a more inclusive and pluralistic understanding of dance—one that recognizes diverse knowledge systems and positions movement as a vital force in shaping both artistic and social futures.

The iNf9t Flo Practice: A Journey Toward Humanitarian Art for Young Audiences

Simbarashe Norman Fulukia’s iNf9t Flo practice is rapidly emerging as a transformative force within the world of dance and wellness. Rooted in traditional Zimbabwean Mbira music and ancient rhythms, iNf9t Flo is more than just movement; it is a holistic experience that nurtures mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Now, Fulukia is using this unique practice as a tool for humanitarian art, focusing on empowering young people and fostering community engagement.

A significant turning point in the development of iNf9t Flo as a humanitarian art form came when Fulukia embarked on a residency organized by Assitej Norway, under the theme of Humanitarian Art. This residency provided him the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share his passion for using art to create positive change. It was in this collaborative environment that Fulukia found the inspiration to channel his practice into a force for good.

A Residency Experience: Finding Clarity and Purpose

During the residency, Fulukia drew valuable insights from both peers and the program itself. One of the most profound influences came from The Flying Seagulls Norway, who led workshops that offered participants clarity, vision, and practical tools to inspire their humanitarian work. This experience motivated Fulukia to integrate humanitarian ideals into his own work, transforming iNf9t Flo into a practice that addresses the emotional and spiritual needs of individuals, particularly young people.

Reflecting on his time at the residency, Fulukia expresses gratitude for having been part of TYAOSLO24, a platform that deepened his understanding of how art can be used as a tool for healing and empowerment. The experience solidified his commitment to using iNf9t Flo to create a lasting impact on youth by providing them with the means to express themselves, cultivate resilience, and connect with their cultural heritage.

The Energy of iNf9t Flo: A Life Force for Healing

Central to the iNf9t Flo practice is the idea of energy—a life force that flows through all living beings. According to Fulukia, this energy serves as the link between an individual’s physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects. It is deeply aligned with the rhythms of nature and the body’s inherent vitality. In iNf9t Flo, this energy is activated through movement and the integration of Mbira music, harmonizing the body with the earth and its natural flow.

Fulukia views this energy as a source of healing. By learning to cultivate and channel it, participants can achieve inner clarity, mental balance, and a stronger connection to both themselves and their community. For young people, this practice becomes an invaluable tool for navigating the challenges of adolescence, building emotional resilience, and fostering a deeper sense of self-awareness.

Bringing iNf9t Flo to Young Audiences

Fulukia’s vision for iNf9t Flo as a humanitarian art form focuses on youth empowerment. Through workshops, performances, and community programs, he aims to inspire young people to explore their creativity and connect with their cultural roots. The following initiatives are part of this vision:

  • Workshops and Programs: Fulukia plans to lead iNf9t Flo workshops in schools and community centers, teaching young people to harness their energy through movement and dance.

  • Collaborations with Artists: By partnering with local musicians, visual artists, and educators, Fulukia seeks to create interdisciplinary projects that engage youth in multiple forms of artistic expression.

  • Performances and Festivals: Through cultural festivals like Me!Fest, Fulukia will showcase iNf9t Flo as part of performances that celebrate diversity and unity, providing young participants with a platform to share their experiences.

Cultural Diplomacy and Social Impact

Fulukia's dedication to cultural diplomacy is reflected in his roles as a member of the Young Dance Network and the International Dance Council (CID) at UNESCO, where he advocates for the role of dance in addressing social issues. His commitment to building bridges between artistic communities is evident in his leadership of projects in Norway, such as the Bergen Afro Arts Festival, aimed at connecting African and European artistic communities.

Driven by a commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), Fulukia focuses on sustainable employment, gender equality, and social equity through his artistry. His work challenges societal norms, promotes cultural preservation, and strives to create a sustainable dance ecosystem that empowers individuals and communities alike.

A Future of Humanitarian Art

Simbarashe Norman Fulukia’s journey with iNf9t Flo continues to evolve, and the residency with Assitej Norway provided the clarity and inspiration he needed to channel his work into humanitarian art. Grateful for his experiences with The Flying Seagulls Norway and TYAOSLO24, Fulukia is now more determined than ever to use iNf9t Flo to empower young people and foster a deeper connection to cultural traditions, community, and the energy that flows within us all.

As Fulukia’s research and practice grow, iNf9t Flo is poised to make a lasting impact, transforming not only the lives of participants but also the broader dance and wellness community.
